What Accelerate Africa Venture Fellowship is

Accelerate Africa is a pre-seed and seed-stage accelerator launched in January 2024 by Iyin Aboyeji through Future Africa, with the explicit ambition of becoming "the Y Combinator of Africa." Aboyeji is a serial entrepreneur who co-founded Andela (the pan-African talent marketplace) and Flutterwave (Africa's largest fintech company), making him one of the most prominent figures in African tech. The accelerator was launched with a $750,000 grant from USAID through the Prosper Africa initiative, with additional support from the Empowering Economic Growth Foundation (EEGF). Unlike many African accelerators that operate remotely, Accelerate Africa runs entirely in person, requiring founders to participate on-site for the full program duration. Each cohort selects 10 pre-seed or seed-stage startups from any sector across all 54 African countries. The 10 selected startups are divided into two groups of five for intensive work. The 8-to-10-week program focuses on enhancing founders' skills in storytelling, team building, business development, product development, and fundraising. The stated goal is ambitious: accelerate founders to reach $1 million in revenue within 18 months of completing the program. Post-program, Future Africa may invest a pre-seed or seed check of $250,000 to $500,000, following its standard due diligence and investment committee process. Participating startups also pitch to a range of external investors including angel investors, Series A and Series B funds, and other institutional capital. The venture fellowship component offers three tracks: a sprint track (shorter intensive), a full fellowship (the core program), and an extension track for continued support. The fellowship aims to provide a seamless career transition into venture capital for professionals interested in the African tech ecosystem, combining curriculum-based learning with hands-on accelerator operations. The inaugural cohort, selected four months after launch, included 10 startups from Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, and Eswatini, spanning AI (CDIAL), healthtech (Checkups), autotech (Flickwheel), and HR tech (Juiceme), among others.
